Hello there.

I use the same mobo and i saw the same problem enough times to understand that it is
a kernel module problem.
Search carefully your kernel configuration and load all the important modules.
Nforce2 + 3Com Ethe ....

I use them 4 sure ...

Could also be vmware.

I go with G on this. Check the modules carefuly.

Since it's your first install, I suggest you first try to do a stage 3 install instead of stage 1, and use genkernel to generate your kernel.

This is more easy. When you get the hang of it go about configuring and exploring on your own.

When I started with linux almost 2 years ago now I did it the same way and it worked wonderful.

Good luck.

Edit: Commands to figure out the types of hardware you have are lspci and dmesg. To examine dmesg output you can do: dmesg > a && nano -w a

Use these commands in a second terminal (alt+f2, alt+f1 to go back to the first terminal)

wild guess, are you using bash-3.1? if so try to downgrade to bash-3.0-r14
