My system completly slows down when anything has to access the harddrive. It is a Seagate Barracua 7200 Rpm 200 GB drive the model number is: ST32008224s on a via 6420 controller. The processor is amd64 3000+ running 64bit gentoo.
These are the hdparm resualts compared to a pata drive

Timing buffered disk reads: 118 MB in 3.01 seconds = 39.17 MB/sec

Any Suggustions on what might be wrong or things that migh speed it up a bit?

What are the specs of those drives ? Those numbers don't mean much without specs.

hdparm -i /dev/sda

If you want to see what happens to I/O, emerge & run dstat.
Run it in one terminal, then do something disk-intensive in another (or start OpenOffice ;-)

)

It seems a bit better after moving to kernel version 2.6.14-ck6 but it still lags some in programs. and it takes a while to start firefox and thunderbird. I am going to try prelinking them.

As you can see from those first 4 columns, it hardly spends any time in IOWAIT - the cpu time spent waiting for I/O to complete. This normally means it's working optimally, if it weren't for the fact that it is taking almost all of your system CPU time during those operations. This would lead me to suspect that the drive is not using DMA at all. Except that it has to be, since the transfer speed is normal - just with absurd CPU usage. Figure out how much cache is on board this drive, and anything else that may be suspect.
