Allora inanzitutto buone feste a tutti, ho un problema con sta cavolo di penna usb, non riesco neanche a montarla (magari poi mi vedo hal e vari impicci per l'automount). Per la configurazione del kernel ho seguita la guida http://www.gentoo.org/doc/it/usb-guide.xml, ma inserendo la mia penna (anche riavviendo con la penna inserita) nel dmesg la mia penna viene vista infatti:

Se provo a montarla però:
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb/
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
non so cosa fare, mancano qualche cosa nel kernel?? Oppure la penna non è /dev/sda1(con altre distro è stata sempre chiamata così) e se non è questa come faccio a capire come udev la chiama?
Aiuto! 
P.s. La mia penna è una Creative Muvo tx econ altre distro (suse e debian) non ho mai avuto problemi, ma in quelle distro il kernel era precompilato

per prima cosa ti consiglio allora di fare una piccola modifichina al tuo sistema almeno avrai maggiore visibilità in /dev
fai:

e modifichi la voce così come segue:

almeno in /dev ti mostrerà solo quello che è utilizzato.. poi da un bel:
e vedi dove te l'ha messa

Nel dmesg non c'è nulla che faccia riferimento alla penna, ma solo alla stampante: quando inserisco la penna io ottengo:

Te la vede come sdb come si evince da ciò che hai postato, per vedere la lista dei dischi con le relative partizioni dai però ad occhio considera la tabella delle partizioni di sdb invalida...
Fossi in te proverei a ricreare la partizione vfat da GNU/Linux. |

Mi sa che hai letto la mia (e a me funziona, tranne che non posso ritoccare la tabella delle partizioni ma quello nemmeno da windows) 
Rispetto alle mie righe sembra che a lui non parta l'emulazione scsi, ma dovrebbe essere compilata visto che gli parte usb_storage all'avvio (e non mi pare si possa compilare questa senza l'emulazione scsi abilitata).

Ma leggendo bene questo output ho capito la mia penna viene chiamata uba (che poi per montarla devo dire uba1) francamente nn la ho mai sentita (mia ignoranza) ma come mai la chiama uba invece di sda?? Ci sono delle differenze??Come posso vedere se le prestazioni di trasferimento ci sono (usb 2.0)?

Quindi il dispositivo è /dev/uba1
Ti sconsiglio questo driver, però: l'emulazione scsi è generalmente migliore; ma è vero che sono rimasto un po' indietro, non so se ora sia mogliorato.

Dovrebbe
Però hai provato a montarlo con quel dispositivo? Magari mi potevi dire se è migliorato: l'emulazione è sempre una forzatura, credo che finirà come con l'ATAPI, e in futuro non sarà più necessaria nessuna emulazione. Vorrei solo sapere quando arriva questo futuro

Probabilmente essendo disponibile l'altro driver l'emulazione non parte; mi sembra ci fosse un'opzione da passare al kernel, ma non ricordo

credo che tu possa utilizzare time.
prendi un file e lo copi e con time misuri il tempo impiegato.
lo fai 5 volte e fai la media.
lo stesso file lo leggi dalla penna x 5 volte ed ottieni il tempo in lettura. |

Mi sembra un buon metodo. Però ho notato che c'è una grossa differenza per l'usb (almeno col driver scsi-emul) se si copia un file di 100MB o 100 file da 1MB; credi ci sia una differenza su questo tra i due drivers?

Rimuovi quel driver.
Come ti ho detto ci sarà un'opzione al kernel ma non la ricordo, o magari potresti scrivere una regola di udev, ma sono soluzioni comunque più complesse se quel driver non lo vuoi usare.

In tal caso ti conviene montare la penna con l'opzione sync di mount, altrimenti è probabile che il processo di copia termini prima del completamento (la copia effettiva dovrebbe essere di default posticipata ai momenti di inattività del disco o allo smontaggio).
