|
|
Currently I have a dedicated server running CentOS but I'm wanting to switch to Gentoo. My hosting company does rent kvm over ip equipment but it seems a little too pricey.
To get around using a KVM, perhaps I can reuse my old boot partition that i never ended up using. My thought was maybe I can install a small linux distro to the 100MB Partition from within CentOS then update grub to boot the new linux. Then at that point I could reboot the box end up in the small linux distro where i could start installing gentoo.
Has anyone done anything like that before, or any ideas on what distro to use? |

I checked out damn small linux, looks good but runs 2.4 kernel
according to the gentoo knoppix guide it says you need a 2.6 kernel
any other ideas? |

Is there any reason that you could not take DSL as a base, make an image with a 2.6 kernel and use that, you have 100 MB to play with so DSL with a 2.6 kernel should still have plenty of room.
Failing that you could modify a minimal install CD image to automatically start sshd, and have set passwords. |

Or just install DSL, download recent kernel sources, build a new 2.6 kernel, boot it and then install gentoo. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered
