Currently configuring Xorg. Following this guide:

Problem at this point:

# Xorg -configure
The USB optical wheel mouse couldn't be detected when I tried the above CLI. When I installed my new Gentoo, I was following this guide:

And have done this:

Check yout /etc/X11/xorg.conf for your Device
It should look something like (if using udev):

Most config-apps still don't accept/check udev, which is now default in Gentoo.
If this is not your problem, post output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log after

There seems to be a typo in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
It is looking for your mouse at /dev/mice (which is not there). Point it to /dev/input/mice and you are hopefully set 
To check for your mouse just:

Mice are (device-wise) seen as /dev/input/mouse0 (or /dev/input/mice if you want to use several mice). In some cases /dev/psaux is used. In either case you can check if the devices do represent your mouse by checking the output of those files when you move your mouse. You will usually see some junk on your screen. To end the session press Ctrl-C.

If your mouse isn't detected, verify if all the necessary modules are loaded.
If your mouse is detected, fill in the device in the appropriate InputDevice section. In the next example you'll see we also set two other options: Protocol (which lists the mouse protocol to be used -- most users will use PS/2 or IMPS/2) and ZAxisMapping (which allows for the mousewheel (if applicable) to be used).
