Hi guys,

I'm new to Gentoo. I've used several other versions of Linux, but I'm finding myself in a lot of new situations this time around. After several recompiles of the kernel and many long hours fighting with Grub, I finally got the CLI going pretty well. However, I can't get my video driver to work, as Gentoo seems to have never heard of the Radeon series. However, I thought that if I could just get into KDE using standard VGA drivers that could be solved because I could go to the ATI site and download the driver (can't do it from links because it uses asp redirection for the download. I find that rather ironic). However, now I can't find my mouse. If I try to run Xorgcfg GUI style, I have to use the number pad to get around (and it eventually takes my windows away from me and locks up, haven't figured that one out yet). If I use the -textmode flag with it, I eventually come to a prompt asking me for the location of my mouse. I thought I'd be smart and just browse on over to /dev and see what it had listed. But Gentoo was one step ahead of me, and didn't list anything that looks like a mouse in /dev. So I just went with the default that comes up (/dev/mouse) and here's what I got:

Quote:
(EE) Failed to load module "speedo" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) xf860OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse
No such file or directory.
(EE) Mouse0: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse0"
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

Did I miss the step where I was supposed to install a mouse? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

**Edit** um... let's pretend like I didn't mention anything about the Radeon drivers, shall we? *chants* emerge is my friend, emerge is my friend...**/Edit**

What about /dev/input/mouse?

You have to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Find where it says
Code:
    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver      "mouse"

then under that change Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" to Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0"

xon,

Your mouse should be at /dev/input/mice, it may also be at /dev/psaux.
There is an emerge for the ATI binary driver and and install FAQ http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml

Wow, you guys are quick! Thanks. I've got the mouse working (/dev/input/mouse0), but emerge is no longer my friend. I'm going to go play with the install guide NeddySeagoon just posted, I'll be back, I'm sure.

Thanks for the help!

xon,

/dev/input/mouse0 is the first mouse. You can have 16 without a kernel rebuild.
/dev/input/mice is all mice.

Hooray, I'm in KDE. It's not perfect, but now that I'm in I can start tweaking stuff.

Thanks for the help!
