If I get an email notification and then I click on the link to view the message but am not logged in to the website, am i right in assuming that it doesn't count as a visit by my username, just guest, so I won't get any more email alerts from that topic until I log in and visit that thread?

Yes, you're right.

Edit: See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-405866-highlight-notification.html as well.

that sucks, is there any way to stop it from happening, subscribe to notifications such that they have to be manually cancelled otherwise you always get them?

That would suck as well, because you'd get an email for every reply and a busy thread could easily fill up your mailbox.

well, my mailbox can take the extra few kb and I'd like to have the choice as would a lot of other people no doubt given the other thread, that way there wouldn't be any way of losing a thread (I must have lost tonnes thinking about it which isn't good for participation). I was wondering why so many people who start threads are very chatty to start with and then disappear, at least some are probably "dropped watches".

BTW, I take it you're a KDE advocate from the sig?

Well, feel free to create a bugreport about it. I can't say whether it get's implemented, but this way the idea won't get lost.

With over 2000 posts per day sending out notification mails to every subscribed user for every reply would result in a huge amount of SPAM erm notification mails, let's not rather do that. Why don't you just log in and phpBB will know you visited that thread?

usually I do, but if I read a post but don't reply to that one and I don't notice that I'm not logged in then I'll lose the thread... I think this has probably happened to me a few times....

also, you go straight to thread, then log in, would it take you back to thread to log it, or you'd have re-find?

A feature for managing topic watches is on the TODO list.

When you log in it takes you to the forum index, but you can get back to the topic in your browser's history.
