I am about to run "emerge -uD world", but before I want to do, these are the packages it wants to emerge:

Code:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-devel/gcc-config-1.3.13-r2 [1.3.13-r1]
[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.6-r3 [2.3.5-r3]
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/man-1.6c [1.6-r1]
[ebuild     U ] app-misc/pax-utils-0.1.11-r1 [0.1.10]
[ebuild  NS   ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r3
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.11 [1.0.10]
[ebuild     U ] media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.11 [1.0.10]
[ebuild     U ] app-editors/nano-1.3.10-r1 [1.3.9]
[ebuild  N    ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-oss-0.10.2
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/gstreamer-0.8.12 [0.8.10]
[ebuild  N    ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-oss-0.8.12
[ebuild  N    ] dev-java/ant-core-1.6.2-r5

I am mainly worried about upgrading gentoo-sources. Will it break any of my configs? Will I need to re-emerge anything after I upgrade kernels?

You don't have to be worried about upgrading the kernel-sources.
This only makes the source available in /usr/src/, nothing more then that.
From this you would have to manually upgrade using the procedure in the manual using make menuconfig, etc to really upgrade your kernel. But to do so is your choice, it is not done automatically.

ps) One sidenote. These kernel-sources can take up quite a lot of space on your harddrive as each of the kernel-sources takes ~200-500MB. That rapidly counts up to a lot of GB's. So remember to unmerge kernel-sources that you haven't used for building a kernel at some point.

ps2) I asume you don't have the use-flag "symlink" set as that would automatically change the symlink /usr/src/linux to point to the new emerged kernel-source.

I emerged that yesterday and it went just fine.

I think it just emerges the sources so you can compile the new kernel later if you like.

It didnt even seem to change my /usr/src/linux symlink so I think you're safe.

It also didn't remove my current sources, I was watching for that lol.

I rebooted today too and everything booted up into my kernel =)

The kernel has nothing to do with the config files of any application.

Installed packages providing kernel modules shall be rebuild or your new kernel won't find that modules ... but that shouldn't be that much packages.
