I posted in the kernel/hardware forum about non existent /dev/dsp devices. But that somehow, gaim under KDE was playing sounds, but nothing else worked, I was getting non-existent /dev/dsp errors. Well sure enough, someone asked if I had included the OSS emulation for ALSA. Which was a big no, even though I knew better...
So, I came back after the weekend and compiled the appropriate kernel modules. So, now when I lsmod, I see:

And sure enough, Now I have /dev/sound/dsp and if I do

I don't get the error messages as before. But neither do I get any sound. No static, just silence.
No errors in dmseg.
This is going to be ugly, but because so many people say to un-mute this, and mute that, here is the output of amixer:

As far as I can tell, that ought to work. PCM and Master are unmuted.
And now, no sound from gaim 
So, I'm kind of looking for people that are running Shuttle SN25P systems that have working sound, to let me know what configuration worked for them. (ALSA vs OSS, modules vs monolithic, amixer settings, etc...)
Some detais are: kernel is 2.6.1r5, alsa is 1.0.10, udev is 070. I've run alsaconf, and the modules all load at system boot.
