|
|
Hi all,
I have an AMD64 3400 processor, but whilst setting up cpufreqd i noticed that the system thinks it can only go up to 2.4, not 3.4?
Code: |
analyzing CPU 0:
driver: powernow-k8
CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0
hardware limits: 1000 MHz - 2.40 GHz
available frequency steps: 1000 MHz, 1.80 GHz, 2.00 GHz, 2.20 GHz, 2.40 GHz
available cpufreq governors: ondemand, userspace, performance
current policy: frequency should be within 1000 MHz and 2.40 GHz.
The governor "ondemand" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency is 1000 MHz (asserted by call to hardware).
|
Im willing to bet this is just my misunderstanding of the way in which such things work, but I have to ask, as it's not clear to me what's going on.
Thanks! |

I believe that the 3400+ in the processor name means that AMD think it is equivalent to a 3400 Mhz Pentium 4, not that it actually runs at that speed. |

Not really since it runs cooler and uses significantly less power than a 3.4 GHz p4 and also performs better in most compiling, gaming and office applications but I admit it does fall behind in streaming video applications. _________________ John

Yes, that's right. My 2800+ runs at 2.0 Ghz. |

My 3000+ runs on 2.2Ghz I think.
You should search for the Megahertz Myth a bit on Google, I suppose. |

If I remember it correctly Intel in the future will do it the same way AMD does it know.
No more speeding up the processors by giving it only more MHz's but by optimizing it
internally instead.
I think that is a very good decision. (Some reasons are already mentioned above by drescherjm.) _________________ Greetings,
