I'm not getting the preview feature for nautilus for text files (where is shows you the first couple lines of text in the icon) and mp3 files (plays on mouseover). I have it turned on under Preference--Preview.

Any ideas,
Mike

Run nautilus from your favourite terminal and check for error messages when attempting those features and when disabling/enabling them.

Also, versions and specifics would be helpful

I get no error messages when running nautilis from a console window. I'm running Gnome 2.2 on Gentoo 1.4 using "~x86".

The nautilus packages I have emerged are
gnome-base/nautilus-2.2.2 *
gnome-extra/nautilus-media-0.2.1 *
gnome-extra/nautilus-gtkhtml-0.3.2 *
x11-themes/nautilus-themes-1.0 *

I'm not sure about the text preview, but for the mp3 preview I had to go to gnome setup/sound and click on enable sound server at start up. After that it worked like a charm.

That works, thanks. Now if I could get the preview icons for text working I would be set.

I have the same problem and haven't found a solution. However, it seems that we are not the only ones.

Emerge gedit again... It worked for me after I emerge gedit 2.2.2

I love it... totem makes icon previews, eog make icon previews for pictures, and gedit for text....

Now I have to get all SVG icons so everything else doesnt look blured when I have a larger icon view.

gah...

i guess i'll wait until gedit 2.2.2 becomes unmasked...

until then.. generic icons...

the thing is... nautilus used to do text thumbnails before... then i upgraded nautilus.. and now it doesn't do it...

i've posted a remedy if you still can't get this working, and you're using a non-standard icon theme....
