Hi,

does changing something in /etc/env.d/ always require a reboot or restart of the X-Server?

I installed a new Java-engine, it was placed in the XYjava in env.d, env-update put it into /etc/profile.env.
But new gnome-terminals started from Gnome-panel still use the old variable, unlike root-shells or framebuffer terminal - logins.

Thanks,
max

Did you run:
source /etc/profile
after env-update?

yes, this helps, all variables are then set properly.
But if i create a new gome-terminal, the old settings are given to it!

...start a new terminal
Code:
max@fry ~ $ echo $JAVA_HOME
/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.09
max@fry ~ $ source /etc/profile
max@fry ~ $ echo $JAVA_HOME
/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.10
max@fry ~ $

...

You might try shutting down gnome, typing "source /etc/update", then restarting it. If you haven't already.

no, i thought it would be nice to *not* have to do this.
I nearly never reboot as Suspend to RAM|Disk works flawlessly on my laptop.

but anyway, i'll reboot.

Sorry, I worded that badly. I meant you should just end your gnome session, run "source /etc/profile" from the non-graphical terminal, then launch X/gnome again.

this is what i just did.

just found it sad, that i really had to quit my gnome-session to let the changes take effect,
reminds me of "To finish the installation of the security update, windows must be restarted. Reboot now/..."

Oh, what might've work was executing the "run command" from the gnome menu, then typing "source /etc/profile". I'm recording this for prosterity. I'm sorry it's too late to help you.
