Hi!
I still cant boot without a slackware bootdisc. See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=41602 .
However, when I boot from that disc i cant use my network card and other things ( i don't think the fault is with the disc but i dont care). In the boot-process I read something like:
Failed to load (modulename) for all thing in modules.autoload
I cant do much without a internet connection so what should I do?
Thank you for all answers!! |

tell me if I get this right: youre booting from a slackware disc with a gentoo kernel in order to install gentoo?
If you have heaps of spare bandwith you could as well download a knoppix cd, which works fine on almost any hardware... _________________ I'm really wondering what Lovechild is doing nowadays... |

Knoppix is a bootable linux distro. Booting the knoppix cd will lead you to a completely working linux environnement, including xfree. And it does a good job at recognizing your hardware _________________ Knowledge belongs to the world |

The reason (i think) you're having problems with the slackware disk is because it's a different kernel version than your 'failed compile' gentoo one - ergo, it can't pull in the modules for your hardware, as they're compiled for the wrong kernel.
Ultimately, you need to get a natively working gentoo kernel before you can really go anywhere directly with gentoo. and it's probably going to be easiest if you make and compile that kernel on the box that needs it.
In order to do that, you need a bootable system to build a kernel on; which is where the slackware boot disk, livecd or knoppix disk comes in handy.
The advantage of a knoppix disk is that it's a complete distro on a CD, so you can have a fully working system (complete with kde, and net access) to build your kernel with. It also doubles as a great rescue disk. you can find it at http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=39998 has more details on doing it that way. _________________ make menuconfig not war |
