Yep.. I promised Cokehabit this would never happen, but I guess it's a cold day in hell today.

Gentoo is merrily compiling on the desktop, when I say merrily I of course mean the poor 1600+ Athlon-XP is getting the exercise of a lifetime.

Being of unsound mind and body I decided to test the new Gentoo Installer and for added entertainment I threw in the Rockhopper stage 3 tarball to save me some time. A most pleasant experience might I add, the installer functioned nearly flawlessly and much to my pleasure and amazement genkernel actually compiled an image that booted on my machine for once.

Next step, getting GNOME up and running, then commence the tweaking, Portage has gotten so much more complex since I used it last so I'm sure there will be plenty to learn.

On the upside, it's freezing here today, compiling heats the room up..

Nice choice. :D

If you don't already have it, try one of the 2.1 portage releases. The metadata is superfast and my favorite feature is how USE flags that are enabled are shown before the - ones.

Code:
[ebuild   R   ] x11-wm/openbox-3.3_rc2-r2  USE="nls xinerama -pango -startup-notification" 0 kB

That makes us two persons that come back to Gentoo at the same time. After using Arch linux and OpenSuse but never satisfied with them. So to my metadistro which I plan to use for quite a long time. And yes Gnome is the best. The good thing about OpenSource is that Linus Torvalds can say some moronic thing about Gnome and just nobody cares.

Good! My Gentoo-experience is heavily connected with my Lovechild-experience and that's the way to go! :)

Welcome back!

I'm glad to hear that you're giving Rockhopper! a try-out. You may not want to hear this, but its probably not good timing to install Rockhopper on a Friday. Friday is when the new GCC builds come out, and Rockhopper typically gets updated on Saturday. Of course, that's nothing that a couple of extra emerge cycles can't fix!

Nice to see you're back. :D

Even after 3 days worth of compiling, stepping down to stable, I still failed to make Gentoo like me again - it would for some reason make even links crash when entering most websites (most annoyingly *,gentoo.org) - Thus the Gentoo adventure is over, 3 days without email is about my limit.. back to Ubuntu for me, at least till I figure this one out...

i wouldn't call it the dark side. there is definitely something alluring about the idea of installing a complete, working, cutting-edge system with a minimal amount of time and effort. in fact, i think i'll install kubunto on a box later today. choice is a wonderful thing.

Well, if it will make you feel better, this weekend I took an old 750 MHz PIII desktop that was so old and unattended that it had Gnome 2.6 on it. Plus, /etc/make.profile pointed to a Gentoo 1.4 profile!

Somehow, I managed to bring it up to date after an emerge sync

That also heated my house pretty well.

Which leads to a question, how much of a jump can one upgrade Gentoo? Would going from a 1.2 profile to 2005.1 work?

Hand me a nifty multicore machine so installing doesn't take that long and I'll assure you Gentoo will run on my machine - however having to repeatedly recompile glibc and gcc on this machine is directly painful - glibc alone takes well over an hour.

On the bright side, I have nothing but praises for Rockhopper, if someone really wants a system compiled with gcc 4.1 ( and of course if Fedora Core Development isn't an option ), Rockhopper is definately worth a try. Everything was set up like the gcc 4.1 thread instructed and it even worked directly with the Gentoo Installer for extra time saving (another impressive feat btw.).

Rockhopper definately gets the Lovechild seal of approval

GCC 4.1 itself seems to be in a fairly good state, I had issues with only one package while compiling - although as is evident runtime was rather erratic.

oh dear, you should have used the GRP then you would have had all the long compiling stuff done.

playfool, thanks for the kind words. one of the primary considerations in designing Jackass! and Rockhopper! was 100% Gentoo compatability, so that the tarballs could be used interchangably with the Gentoo tarballs.
