Hey there,

After following the rather nice instructions that came with gentoo, I find myself at a bit of an impasse.

I've gotten myself to the end of the instructions and have rebooted, only to find that Grub gives me an:

Quote:

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda6

Error 15: File not found

Now I'm assuming it can't find my bzImage? I checked by booting from a floppy distro I had lying around and afaik my bzImage is in /boot??

now, my boot partition is hda1, my swap is hda5 and my root partition is hda6 (don't ask)

what did I do wrong?

What's your grub.conf look like? Here's my setup, hope it helps (don't laugh at all the partitions, I was playin' around!):

Partitions:
Code:

/dev/hda1   /boot   ext2
/dev/hda2   /usr     reiserfs
/dev/hda3   swap
/dev/hda5   /
/dev/hda6   /var
/dev/hda7   /var/tmp
/dev/hda8   /tmp
/dev/hda9   /home

grub.conf:
Code:

default 0
timeout 10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo GNU/Linux v1.4
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda5 idebus=66 hdd=ide-scsi

After starting this thread yesterday, I've already received seven emails from people who have the same problem.

I did find a workaround, but it's hardly orthodox, I'd like it if some guru can have a look at this problem and tell use what went wrong.

After some closer inspection, I noticed something weird about my /boot...

in fact, cd /boot followed by ls yields this:

boot grub bzImage
root #

and joy, inside this mysterious "boot" directory inside /boot, we find:

boot grub bzImage
root #

so it seems kind of like an infinite loop. The reason why Grub cannot locate the bzImage file in /boot still eludes me.

My silly, and terribly unproper workaround is basically this:

  1. since we can't boot our kernel, put back the gentoo cdrom and boot from that.

  2. mount your harddrives, like you did when you installed.

  3. copy your /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/bzImage to / (or another directory you have in mind)

  4. edit your grub config file, like in the manual, but set the kernel= to match the place you just copied your bzImage to
(in my case, I temporarily copied it to /)

  5. reboot

that should boot your system.

Whilst I wait for a good explanatory post from a Guru (this is the first time I've EVER done manipulations like this, my last systems were RH8 and MDK 9!!!) I'll be off trying to get my Ethernet card back to work.[/list]

Hi ShadowmageIX,

Hope everything is working out now ?

The reason why you can't see anything in /boot, is because it is a symbolic link to /boot.

Don't know if you noticed in the the install doc (and in /etc/fstab), /boot is NOT mounted at bootup.

Hence, ls /boot (or cd /boot) shows the sym-link, shows the sym-link, shows the sym-link, shows the sym-link, etc, etc.

Just mount /boot, then cd into it :D

Don't know if that makes any sense !?

Anyhoo, good luck!
