The laptop is pretty new. I don't own one, but if you actually own the hardware, there's plenty of support for gettin gentoo installed on it.
If you don't own one yet, can you look for detailed information on the North bridge and South bridge inside it? What sound chip does it have? |

I can't get the exact spefications of the sound chip YET, I know it's 16 bits. But I have allready bought it and it should arive in a week. And I think that there aren't many people who have got the model because it's a Netherlands only model (at least, that's what I've heard.) But since I already bought it I'll just try my best to install Gentoo. But is there a significant diference between the diferent distributions. If so I'll try Ubunu two... |

Hi,
Gentoo is in a class all by itself for being customizable. So I'd say, you want to end up using Gentoo. But how you get there, well, that's different for every box.
Knoppix is designed to run straight from the CD. No install needed. That's kind of what a Gentoo liveCD does, except in Gentoo it's supposed to help you install Gentoo onto the machine. In Knoppix, you just boot up and go.
Ubuntu is an easy-to-use linux. It's based off Debian (Knoppix is based off Debian too). Debian's "testing" packages are where you would find the most recent stuff (unstable, still testing).
Then there's Debian itself.
In comparison, Gentoo can give you the most up-to-date software, but it's relatively painless if you install a Universal CD to get your laptop into linux and then update to the most recent Gentoo release after the hardware issues are settled. |

I thought the universal CD contained the newest version allready... But then how do I update it (this maybe is a bit of a noobish question, but when you haven't got the program, it is hard to experiment with it). And what is the use of the package CD? Is it possible to download all the software on the package CD from the web without wasting a CD, not that I can't afford one, but I was just wondering... |

Although the universal CD contains the latest release (2005.1 right now), the packages in 2005.1 still get updated pretty frequently. So the universal CD isn't rebuilt every night... that means it could be slightly out of date. But it will have a really recent kernel, etc.
Yeah, don't burn the package CD. It's there just for people who don't want to download stuff. Gentoo is really all about being connected and getting updates live. Updating gentoo is really easy. |
