Hi,
I used to use GNOME but i want to give KDE a try. After emerge kdebase-startkde, i use "anti-aliasing for font" in the kcontrol, but the font still looks terible. It's not smooth.
In addition my screen is LCD (DELL E173FP) and i dont know how to choose the correct driver for it in gentoot, especially KDE like i used to do in fedora with gnome (Display Manager, as i rememeber) Therefore, my screen is abit slow in respond, i can see the delay in printing text on the console.
I guess the reason for the ugly font is that i dont have true-type font and my lcd is not detect correctly

kdebase-startkde is just a script for making kde start. So by installing that package by itself you've essentially installed the most minimal kde system possible. And this minimal system excludes most of their hardware detection/fonts stuff apparently.

You might try instead doing "emerge kde"; you'll get a more usable system.

Actually there's a better solution here:

One of the posts mentions installing startkde like you did then just include the packages you need. Look at the stuff in /usr/portage/kde-base/ and /usr/portage/kde-misc and decide which ones to install.
