Maybe display the error you get when mounting?
What desktop environment are you using?
How are you trying to mount?

# cd/ mnt
# mount usb

gives :

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

I use fluxbox...i guess this is what you are asking? I'm a noob.

You don't have to change into /mnt. You can mount just using this from anywhere
Code:
mount /mnt/usb

Are you sure the usbstick is formatted FAT?

Can you post the output of this:
Code:
cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep CODEPAGE

Also post
Code:
dmesg | tail -n 50

right after trying to mount.

What is the output of
Code:
fdisk -l

Is there data on the usbstick already, or is it safe to format?

This has to be run as root. You should have it installed, if not you need to emerge util-linux

Looks like the partition is NTFS, not VFAT, Trying changing the type in /etc/fstab to ntfs or auto.
