I think Apple hardware will be more popular now that it's changing to intel's architecture. I'm certain that not before long it will be possible to run Linux on those nearly as good as any ordinary PC, even Windows too perhaps. They will probably move up from just being their own little niché to a mainstream competitor. I've only ever owned one apple machine, and that's my PowerBook G4.. now I'm really wanting to replace it with a new Intel MacBook Pro. :D

i don't know well aqua(i haven't ever used a mac)
so there is 2 that have no relations between them:
*i'm interesed in aqua and want to compare it to kde to see wich one is the more "total computer newbee" friendly because i already compared windows(XP,2000) and kde and found that kde is more "total computer newbee" friendly...and aqua has such reputation so i want to compare them...
*it may be amusing for people who have mac-os(and so aqua i'll discuss it later) and windows to have the same graphical interface...
aqua:if people don't USE(different from buying because some people could buy osx in order to suport apple(that does free software) and/or because the process of beeing refunded is difficult) aqua they use X11 ...they use aqua because they like apple graphical interface or they want it for compatibility purposes but that argument is less important because it's an X86 machine that can normaly run linux and wine and all wrappers

PostPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2006 3:21 pm    Post subject: State of Gentoo on OS X? Intel Macs? Reply with quote

Hello,

First, will Gentoo support the new Macintels in OS X (I would need it for my new MacBook Pro, when it comes)?

I've tried Gentoo on OS X before, but with little success. It's been so long that I was wondering what the state of Gentoo on Mac OS X is today. Are ther a significant number of ebuilds availible for it? Is it useful? What is your opinion (informed or uninformed)?

I would use it primarily to get a functioning LaTeX package in OS X and perhaps update vim and a few other CLI apps. Would you recommend Gentoo for my purposes?

Thanks very much,
Aaron

P.S.
I had originally posted this in Gentoo for Mac OS X, but I don't think it gets much traffic down there at the bottom of the page and I'd really like to hear an answer to (or opinion on) my questions.

i have been wondering about this myself. im thinking the mac is really nice because its built on unix and *everything works*

i was thinking of trying gentoo for osX or even running gentoo on an apple laptop. now with the new dual core laptops out i am eagar to see gentoo running on this system. that would make them very attractive to me.

however, if there is no support for the apple and youre thinking of running gentoo on it in place of osX you could always get an ibm or whatever other vendor has the dual core laptops. the only thing is i think we are still waiting for any support of the new dual core laptops. i dont know where gentoo is at with support for this yet.

I know there will be trouble getting Gentoo to run natively on the new Macintels because of their lack of a BIOS (I think EFI support has only been ported to the Itanium platform so far, and I've heard it's buggy) but that isn't really my concern, I have Gentoo on my PC at home.

What I want is Portage in OS X. I would think that this should be easier as you wouldn't have to deal with the BIOS.

i have seen traces of a project that accomplishes this, but it doesnt seem to be mainstream yet. i think its in the works though, because the gentoo bug reporting system has a category for this:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gentoo-alt/macos/targets.xml

im sure if you look around some you would be able to get portage on osX now in its limited capacity
i have no idea if this will work for osX for x86

Why was my post on the state of Portage in OS X (and the possibility of it running in the Macintels) stuck on the end of this giant MacBook forum?

That seems implausible. It's only 31W. That's less than a G4.

More likely is that they're dropping the 12" powerbook, and only releasing a 12" macbook-non-pro/ibook. It's been rumoured for a long time that apple were going to drop one of the 12" models

Possible, yes. My toaster runs linux

The problem is that the Macs use EFI instead of a standard BIOS. The problem is getting past that.

So yeah, it *can* be done. Right now....It's still a work in progress.

Code:
I know that. What I thought was that all of the recent PPC offerings from Apple used 64-bit PPC processors, and that OS X itself was 64 bit. Are you saying this is or isn't the case?

People are always asking this question all over on osx86project.org 's forums, and the answer always is that OSX has always been 32 bit, apple had just added some 64bit extensions to the os that aren't activated when running on 32bit hardware. Someone said earlier that they simply recompiled the whole os for 64bit and then run it in a sorta 32bit compatibility mode got it kinda backwards, that is simply not true. OSX has always been a 32bit os.

just found this.

basicly it seems that the processor in macbook pro can in fact run as 64bit. I wonder if it is possible to enable 64bit processing on the macbook...

So ... does a dual core intel chip with hyper-threading show up as 4 processors?

Ooooh the army of framebuffer penguins I shall have!
