Hi!

I just wanted to update mplayer and dvdrip via

Code:
emerge --update --deep mplayer dvdrio

Unfortunately this update also updated the alsa packages - which allways leads to trouble in my case. Also this time: After I rebooted I had no sound anymore.

The output is:

Code:
CursedBox ~ # /etc/init.d/alsasound start

I've never touched the kernel sources as far as I know and until a few hours ago I had all my sound stuff running well (even heared music during the update :( ). Does someone know what's the reason for this failure?

I've tried to do a

Code:
make modules
make modules_install

but it didn't help (yes, I reemerged the alsa-driver, alsa-headers, alsa-utils, alsa-tools stuff after that).

The installed version is

Code:
media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.10

and unfortunately I don't know what the working version was... :(

Thanks for your help!

Is the /usr/src/linux symlink pointing to your correct kernel source tree, i.e. the one you're using? Surely you're not still using 2.4.25?

The link is correct. Yes, I DO use the 2.4.25 kernel.

Maybe this helps:

Could it be a glibc problem or so? I guess it was glibc that was also updated... but I'm not sure about it.... One should do a emerge --pretend ... > logfile before anything else...

Since I just rebooted, I now have the exact same problem. It seems like a configuration bug, but I don't see one entered in bugzilla.

Hopefully my post will serve to revive the thread so someone smart can solve this.

Check out /var/log/emerge.log for a list of what was emerged. Another possible culprit for things not working after reboot is baselayout, also did you run (were you asked/told to?) etc-update after your last emerge-fest?

Might be worth rebuilding/reinstalling your kernel, but this time delete the module directory in /lib/modules, re-emerge alsa-driver after reboot, and maybe alsa-utils too. Try re-running alsaconf. Is there anything in dmesg | less that gives a hint? Is alsasound still in the boot runlevel? Is the /etc/modules.d/alsa file present and correct?

It looks like the alsa-driver has been updated, and the earlier version is no longer in portage. So going back isn't an option. I always do etc-update when portage asks.

Running alsa-conf just tried to load the snd module, and that fails with the same kernel version error above.

I tried to do a 'make modules && make modules_install' on the kernel, but it fails with this message

Code:

if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map  2.4.26-win4lin-r13; fi
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.26-win4lin-r13/misc/svgalib_helper.o
depmod:         DEVFS_MK_SYMLINK

Also, when I try to re-emerge alsa-driver, I get this error

Code:

 * The alsasound initscript and modules.d/alsa have now moved to alsa-utils
 *
 * Also, remember that all mixer channels will be MUTED by default.
 * Use the 'alsamixer' program to unmute them.
 *
 * Version 1.0.3 and above should work with version 2.6 kernels.
 * If you experience problems, please report bugs to http://bugs.gentoo.org.
 *
 * Updating module dependencies for 2.4.26-win4lin-r13 ...
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in //lib/modules/2.4.26-win4lin-r13/misc/svgalib_helper.o
depmod:         DEVFS_MK_SYMLINK                                                                        [ ok ]
 * Adding module to moduledb.
 * Check out the ALSA installation guide availible at the following URL:
 * http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml

So something seems to be wrong with the devfs setup.
[/code]

Maybe time to switch to a 2.6 kernel and udev?

Yeah, I think so. I'm actually running 2.4.26-r13 kernel with win4lin patches. That's the last win4lin kernel that has the patches in it.

I'm working on switching over to Parallels, which looks like a very good replacement for win4lin. After that works, I'll either go to the latest 2.4 kernel or 2.6.

Thanks for the help. I think I'm trying to bridge too many months between my kernel version and the latest packages that I want.
