Likely this is not the proper forum to ask but I am at a loss what to do.

My system just switches itself off at random times and then refuses to switch on again. It leaves no traces in the logs - much like I just pulled the power cable out of the machine (which of course I don't).

I'm using an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ on a Gigabyte GA-K84 Pro-SLI with an MSI GF 6600 GT videocard. The PSU is an Enermax Noisetaker 400W model.

Recently I just left the computer after it shut itself down and to my surprise it automatically came to life after like 20 minutes. (When I try to switch it on manually nothing happens...) Twice it shut itself down when I was in the BIOS even.

Anyone has the slightest idea what causes this strange and very annoying phenomenon?

I had a similar problem with my computer. The computer would run anywhere from 2 minutes to 15 minutes then shut off with nothing in the logs. Sometimes I could power it on after and sometimes I could not. I switched out the power supply and everything has been working fine since.

So if you have an extra power supply laying around I would suggest hooking it up and seeing if that fixes your problem (before you go out and buy a new one). I am not sure of any other ways to test if your power supply is good or not.

Sadly there is no power supply laying around I could use. I cannot decide if it is the problem of the MB or the PSU...
