hey there,

I am new to gentoo, but I managed to get it installed, and everything working just fine under the console - damn nice work gentoo-team 8)

however, I now wanted to make the next step, and install/emerge etc X + gnome, which I did, all packages emerged successfully, no errors or whatsoever... so I also emerged the nvidia-kernel & nvidia-glx packages, added the NVdriver(s) to the modules.autoload.. and they are loaded fine too.. no errors. I replaced the 'nv' with 'nvidia' in my XF86Config file.... (see below), but when I type 'startx' I get a fuzzy screen, and my machine seems to hang :( only a reboot helps then.

the monitor is a 18.1" TFT display, that should run at 1280*1024, with 60hz ... :)

here's my XF86Config file:

oh yeah btw - how would I enable my USB-mouse for X - xf86config doesn't really offer the option.. does it? :\ (it's a logitech mx700 mouse)

I don't know if this will help, but the nvidia driver documentation (http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-4191/README)
says to remove dri from your XF86Config. Worth a try, but i don't suspect it will work.

I've got a logitech dual optical usb mouse and these are the settings i use

This is in XF86Config:

Code:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse2"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# You only need the following if you have two mouse buttons
Option "Emulate3Buttons"

The only other thing I can suggest for that other problem is trying to re-emerge glx, because that seems to be what xfree is having trouble with.

it's an old post, but in case you're STILL trying:

First, remove this device driver, unless you really do have 2 cards.
If you do have 2 cards, the you need to specify the BusId for both.
I assume this was in error.

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Standard VGA"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"

#...

Driver "vga"

#...

EndSection

Also, It looks like your monitor setting for Horiz and Vert sync are low, though for flat screen's maybe that's normal:
Double check those:

Code:
Section "Monitor"

Identifier "Samsung 181T"

# HorizSync is in kHz unless units are specified.
# HorizSync may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a
# comma separated list of ranges of values.
# NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S
# USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

HorizSync 31.5 - 64.3

# HorizSync 30-64 # multisync
# HorizSync 31.5, 35.2 # multiple fixed sync frequencies
# HorizSync 15-25, 30-50 # multiple ranges of sync frequencies

# VertRefresh is in Hz unless units are specified.

# VertRefresh may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a
# comma separated list of ranges of values.
# NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S
# USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

VertRefresh 50-70

EndSection

And to add my two pennies...

I had this problem with the NVidia drivers and a GeForce 2 MX-200 card. In the end I fixed it by using the 2.4.22 vanilla kernel. I had no end of problems with all of the 2.4.20 flavours that exactly mirror the symptoms you had.

I'm still having problems with the NVidia drivers and the framebuffer. Of to scour the forums methinks...
