Ok, I'm assuming that all other sounds work, xmms as such, and that you want the system notifications.

I'm no expert on the sound server portion, but I know that you do not want to use arts, from what I hear and from my own experiences, arts is difficult. So like I said, I can't help you with the sound server, but under system notifications, click on player settings in the bottom right corner and use an external player. Find a commandline player like aplay. The sounds are ogg, so I don't know if aplay can handle them, but I'm sure you could search the forums or google for a quick howto on console ogg playing.

nope, i dont get any sounds at all unless i request them from the command line. I doa lot of GUI work as part of ym class in school is linux and i would like a media player.

I jsut emerged arts. It is now letting me choose my sound stuff. Except it crashes every time a sound starts to play.

which prog are you using on commandline to test? and did you install arts after kde? some packages compile against arts and it could be better recompiling them.
