[SOLVED] upgrading to latest unstable version fixed the problem
After upgrading my kernel from 2.6.14 to 2.6.15 (vanilla), nvidia-kernel (1.0.6629-r5) doesn't work anymore. It compile and loads ok, but can't set some MTRR anymore. There were no probs with 2.6.14-series.
This is what startx gave me (it leaves blank screen and can't recover console, so i piped that message to file)

Looks like something in kernel has changed. Hoping to solve this so i can get my 3d apps working again with new kernel.

Have you tried a newer version of the nvidia stuff? The newest version ("1.0.8178") is currently marked as ~x86 but think it should save to install it anyway.

I just upgraded to the 2.6.14-r5 gentoo kernel, and I have the same problem - the screen blanks out when running startx. It also blanks randomly when trying to use the framebuffer from the command line (mplayer for example). The problem seems to be in the 2.6.14 gentoo kernels at least, even if not in the vanilla 2.6.14 kernel.
For me, upgrading to the unstable version of nvidia-kernel did not solve the problem. In order to verify that I actually am dealing with the same thing, could you tell me how you piped the output of startx to a text file? I thought that this should work:
Code: | $ startx > xstart.txt |
or maybe this...
Code: | $ startx >> xstart.txt |
but in both situations I just ended up with blank text files. How can I capture that output to read it later?
Thanks in advance,

Thanks. I did manage to pick this up later... it's not the same issue after all.
I ended up opening a new post:
