|
|
Hi everybody,
I just tried to install "stage3-pentium3-2005.1-r1.tar.bz2" from scratch, including the "bootstrap.sh" and "emerge -e system" steps, exactly as the handbook and FAQ say. Both steps fail with error msg: "Couldn't download gnuconfig-20050324.tar.bz. Aborting". Any idea what could have gone wrong? Is there another way to rebuild the toolchain?
Thanks in advance,
'Thomas

I just checked the main mirror and the file doesnt exist on the server, although two newer versions exist. Perhaps an "emerge sync" would update your portage tree to show the correct version of the file, assuming you arent doing a networkless install.
The other point I see is that the extension is .tar.bz instead of .tar.bz2, which could be a problem if its not a typo on your part. |

ok thanks, I'll try the emerge sync.
For the .bz or .bz2 issue: I think it really was .bz, but I can't guarantee; is there a way to find this out (except by trying the whole bootstrap procedure again)? I'm just taking my first steps with gentoo, so I don't know where to search.... |

bootstrap.sh is part of the stage1 install, not the stage3 install. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered

Hi and welcome to the forums.
The Gentoo Installation Handbook gives you detailed instructions to install Gentoo.
If you wish to recompile the toolchain, you should either install using a Stage3 tarball and then use hielvc's emwraph.sh script to rebuild your toolchain, or follow one of the stage1/3 guides - I recommend Bob P's. If you want to install a system with an optimized toolchain, you should look at Bob P's projects. _________________ Jorge.

ok, I did an "emerge --sync", and after this I could do the "emerge -e system" without errors. Thank you all...
idkwiam187: you were right, it's .tar.bz2, not .tar.bz. |
