Hi all,
Recently upgraded my aging machine with a new mobo, new cpu, new ram, and installed gentoo on it.
Installation went perfectly, everything was up & running in no time, but since yesterday i've been trying to get 3D to work with the ATI propriaty drivers. (latest version 8.20.. The driver installs fine, but when starting X i get a black screen & the system hangs badly.
I have the proper AGPGart modules (i think), via & amdathlon64, the card is found, but i've yet to get anything other then a lockup.
Any idea's on what to check?
Cheers

Some more info, incase it helps:
these are the specs of the machine:
Motherboard: Asus K8V-X SE
CPU: AMD Sempron 3.2 running in 32bits mode
Videocard: ATI Radeon 9700 PRo
Tested with:
Kernel: 6.2.14-gentoo-r4 & 6.2.14-gentoo-r5 & 2.6.15-rc7
ATI drivers: 8.20.8 & 8.19.10
Tested with ATI Radeon 9200
All combinations of above result in the same lockup, both cards have been used successfully in another machine also running linux.
The lockup is the following:
After executing startx the monitor gets initialised, yet picture remains black, trying to terminate X doesn't do anything, killing the X task from a remote ssh console results in a hard lockup. |

Some more info, it seems the problem is related to the agpgart module, more specificly, the amd64-agp module, that seems to be unable to correctly access the AGP card.
No matter what config i select in the bios, it keeps reporting the aperture size incorrectly (32M instead of the value set in the BIOS)
This is with kernels 2.6.12-r9, 2.6.14-r4 & 2.6.14-r5 aswell as the vanilla kernel 2.6.14-r7 |

Hi,
I've got this problem, same MB (k8v-x se) and a Nvidia GF5500. amd64-agp misreports AGP apeture size, also hangs X when I try to run it. I can run X without amd64-agp installed (just agpgart and nvidia loaded) but I get no AGP, which sucks for gaming performance (just brought quake 4)
I think this is a kernel bug (reported here http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0512.3/1359.html). I'm upgrading to the latest (2.6.15) and the latest nvidia drivers to see if that helps.
Cheers
