I am seriously reconsidering my love of Toshiba laptops. What idiot decided a BIOS upgrade should be dependent on a win2k/xp program?

I have a bios upgrade .exe . I have extracted the .exe file and revealed a .dll and tmpsetup.exe . Won't run under dos. Wine refuses to do anything useful with the program. Any ideas on how I could use the prog to upgrade the BIOS? {apart from installing 'doze that is}

A lot of hardware vendors have windows only (dos) bios updates.

I would suggest you do a windows livecd with BartPE and update the bios from there.

Not a bad plan. Unfortunately it was foiled by Toshiba's ridiculous requirement that 'Toshiba Common Modules' be installed in order for it to run. As it's a Japanese Dynabook model this is creating issues. The english program seems to install, but then the BIOS upgrade doesn't see them. I don't yet know where the problem lies - it doesn't help that any support info about the laptop requires babelfish to decipher. I might try a Japanese language boot CD if I can find a jap win image. I might also just say stuff it, suffer an old BIOS for now and make sure my next laptop is totally linux friendly {I cream at the idea of a totally non-buggy DSDT, working internal modem and detailed tech specs}.

In the meantime {and for other boxen} a linux prog that can take data from a win/dos prog and update a BIOS would totally rock. I'll give lifetime networking assistance to any programmer who can write such a tool!
