I have a slow modem connection. So, I download each package separately by using command:
emerge kde --pretend /* check what package to download */
emerge --fetchonly --nodeps package_name /* downlaod single package */
/* you can download files from somewhere else that has fast connection and put all files in /usr/portage/distfiles */

Then, finally:
emerge kde /*compiling the whole thing */
or compiling individual package , in the order from the 1st command above:

emerge --nodeps package_name

On my 450Mhz with 512Mb compiling X and KDE took about 30 Hours. I don't know if that is going to be reassuring or not!!

on my k6ii 450 with 256 mb of ram, it took something like 16 hours to compile both x and kde. seeing that it's taking some of you guys almost twice as long makes me feel a little better about my time. :D

i wonder why it did though.. hmmm...

i think it depends on the amount of RAM, the file systems you are using etc.
(did you run hdparm?)

i am guessing your times are so different b/c of use.conf files and your system dependencies.

I have 2 boxes I did this on. One dual P-200 took 48 hours. That machine has 96 MB Ram. and one P2-400 took a little less than 24 hours, that machine has 128MB ram. I am currently working on building Gentoo on a Dual P3-700 box with 512 MB Ram. I am interested in seeing how long X + KDE will take to build on that.

But, the time it is taking for yours seems normal to me (I am in no way an expert), these are very large programs your compiling.

About 6 or 7 hours for me to compile X and kde on a AMD 1600+ with 512 meg of ram, so you having 14 hours on a celeron 500 with 96megs isn't that bad so far. If you are on a slow connection, it will take longer as well, since you probably download about 200 megs worth of source code when doing x and kde, and then if you want to install mozilla or xmms or evolution, prepare to wate for a while as well. xmms took about an hour (i think, I went to lunch and played some frisbee) on my machine because of the gnome dependencies.
I think the more ram you have, the faster it will go, but I would be interested in the dual 700 box...
