I know the topic of Palm Pilots, udev and syncing has been posted many times, but I have searched through them and not found exactly what I am looking for. My Pilot Zire 31 syncs beautifully with Jpilot using the following udev rule (/etc/udev/rules/10-udev.rules):
Code:
BUS="usb", KERNEL=="ttyUSB*", SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld*", SYSFS{serial}="PalmSN12345678", NAME="tts/USB%n", GROUP="users"

but...gnome-pilot and pilot-xfer both fail. Pilot-xfer works sometimes, but not always. Gnome-pilot has never worked for me. Pilot-xfer states it cannot read system info on /dev/tts/USB1, which is the device it is created on, and gnome-pilot just hangs forever until the pilot sync times out. I have looked into the solutions of adding the device to the non-existant /usr/share/gnome-pilot/devices.xml file, but that didn't work either. I have read the wiki article about this situaiton, and it helped me get to this point, but still no gnome-pilot.

I would much rather use gnome-pilot, because I use Evo for mail, but can live with Jpilot. Anyone had any success with gnome-pilot?

yes, i've used gnome-pilot in the past, though i don't use it now. it can be very difficult to get that initial successful sync, but the good news is that once you've achieved that it works smoothly from then on.

as i recall the trick is to ensure that the devices have been created by your pressing the hotsync button *before* attempting the sync from gnome-pilot. if you check /dev/tts/ there should be nothing in there until you press the hotsync button, at which point USB1 (or whatever) will appear (and then disappear again after a while). so if you first ensure that all the permissions etc are ok (as they presumably are, if jpilot is working for you) and then make sure gnome-pilot is pointed at /dev/tts/USB1 (or whatever works with jpilot), you should be able to press the hotsync button and then immediately (or a couple of seconds later...i forget the exact timing) click on "get user info from palm" or whatever the button says in gnome-pilot.

i think that sometimes, even with everything set up properly, it can be temperamental and take several attempts, but with luck you will eventually get the timing right, and after it's synced once, there are no more problems: you can just hit the hotsync button and whatever conduits you've set up to evolution etc. will do their thing.

good luck!

Thanks for the advice - I've been trying it with various different udev rules and still have not met with success. I once got it working on Ubuntu, so I know the system works, but would like to get it running on Gentoo. I will keep trying. Thanks again!

Well, got gnome-pilot working with Evo, but the only thing it syncs is the contacts. Odd. I installed the masked gnome-pilot/gnome-pilot-conduits, and pilot-link to get everything working, but still no todos, or calendar. Will keep pluging away at this until I get it.

congratulations!

not sure what's happening with the conduits though...i never had that problem. you're sure they're set up properly in the evolution and/or gnome-pilot settings? i can't remember which conduits are activated by default, but many aren't...and even if they're active, they need to be set to sync (rather than backup, or copy one way, or whatever).

if you've told them to sync and they're still not working, then i have no idea what the problem is. i don't remember exactly which conduits i used with evolution/palm, but certainly the calendar (as well as the contacts) worked, and i'm pretty sure that others did too.

I hate to say this, but my Palm synced with Evo perfectly on Ubuntu, but not in Gentoo. The Palm syncs beautifully with JPilot in Gentoo though. Will look at the conduits tomorrow - off to get some sleep.... :) Thanks again!
