Hello -
This is only my second stab at gentoo, the first being several years ago. So please bear with me..
I've googled extensively, searched forums and HOWTOs, but can't seem to find out what the hell
happened to my system.
Everything had been working proper for a month or so. Over the span of several days, in an attempt
to get Looking Glass up and running, I emerged all of the necessary java components. No problems there.
After a reboot, however, the system hangs when it begins coldplugging PCI devices.
I managed to use the livecd and remove coldplug from boot runtime level in a chrooted environment, so
that I could boot up normally without network support. All I really *need* is my network card up and running,
so as of right now I'm compiling a new kernel (had been using genkernel).
Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions staring me right in face?
Thanks,
Mark |

Ok - after fooling around a bit more, I can get it to boot properly with coldplug at runlevel. However, it's not picking up my network, sound, or nvidia modules. Stuck again - but at least able to get X up and running.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems the topic has changed in the last hour or so..
Thanks,

dont use coldplug nor hotplug, they both suck. My maschine crashes with them at boot too. Use good old devfs. It always works |

Thanks for the helpful advice.
Solved - apparently caused by doing an emerge --update world. i needed to recompile the kernel with the latest gcc to work properly with modules. |
