Thanks a lot for this helpout I am now a happy user of the 2.6.15-nitro3-kernel
That patch was just what i needed! VMWare up and running.
Am i wrong, or does the system uses more RAM? I mean i would love that, 'cause i once started
a thread on how i could use more. It's frustratinf, if you have 1gig and never more than 300megs are used.
Now it's on 350 and it feels a lot smoother.

Hi.
I have a problem with starting udev at boot. It doesn't start and devices are not created. with 2.6.14 everything works well. After enabling "RC_DEVICES_TARBALL" or something like that - devices are available but udev doesn't start (but everything works) what to do? _________________ -=[powered by Gentoo]=- |

Could someone please explain to me how to use those PATA drivers under the SATA low-level SCSI driver category? I'm talking about the drivers marked "Raving Lunatic," such as the AMD/nVidia PATA driver.
They didn't seem to do anything for me. But maybe I'm misunderstanding what they're for... |

No silent bootsplash here with 2.6.15-nitror2 and r3 Verbose bootsplash is ok but if I run silent then I get a blinking cursor for a couple of seconds until init gets started O_o. I only copied my .config form 2.6.14 nitro-r2 and ran menuconfig to give it a look. Tried rebuilding the fbsplash initrd but no way, no errors reported:
alastor ~ # dmesg |grep -i splash
Bootdata ok (command line is root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x318 udev splash=silent,fadein,theme:livecd-2005.1 quiet console=tty1)
Kernel command line: root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x318 udev splash=silent,fadein,theme:livecd-2005.1 quiet console=tty1
fbsplash: console 0 using theme 'livecd-2005.1'
fbsplash: switched splash state to 'on' on console 0
Everything fine with 2.6.14.
P.S. x86_64 arch |

KAMIKAZE_:
i just hope about two things:
1) You haven't emerge --nodeps with this nitro, have you? if so, don't blame me, i added dependency on udev-079 for a reason
2) If you did emerge new udev as per dependencies, did you run dispatch-conf or equivalent?
About bootsplash:
no idea, i have 32bit arch and don't use fbsplash, i rather like to see if my machine boots ok....
Sorry, but i don't have too much time for support recently, and it won't change in the near future.... :/ _________________ Retired gentoo user |

I tryed both... ~x86 and x86 udev packages - nothing changed.

This isn't really a support question, more of a query. Is anyone using OpenMOSIX with Nitro kernel?? I'm thinking about possibly seeing if I can get the two to work (and seeing as I'm no coder.. this would be very interesting). Right now we have 4 machines setup with DistCC, and it works great! (nitro compiles in about 3mins 30 secs) However, with reading up on openmosix, I wanna experiment with this too. Seeing as I only either use Nitro, or CK's Server sources, it should be interesting. |

I asked in the grub thread a few days ago and got no response.
I just did a new install with nitro3, grub 97, gcc 4.0.2/gcc 4.1, udev 081-r1, and baselayout-1.12.0_pre15
When I boot the system from the HDD for the first time it says "Loading Stage 1.5 Grub" (or something like that), but it only flashed briefly and the computer restarts.
I verified my grub.conf settings, rebuilt grub a few times, and rebuilt the kernel a few times.
Any ideas what might cause the computer to immediately reboot like that? I'm beginning to pull my hair out. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I had this problem too, on my laptop, after letting my dual Windows system Auto Update. It seems that Windows rewrite the grub configuration, somehow and restarts Grub, just like yours. I solved it by booting of a livecd and reinstalling Grub (not the package itself, but on the MBR). _________________ gentoo.ro |

With this particular install, there is no dual boot.
I'll just try to reinstall grub again however. Thanks!
Perhaps I wouldn't have this problem if I could emerge a newer version of grub, but I can't get 1.91 or 1.92 to compile with gcc 4.0.2, 4.0.3, or the latest two snapshots of 4.1-beta. I've tried varying degrees of cflags. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

|
|
Hi all,
resolved kde 3.5 automouting issue (dbus was not upgrading properly due to qt issues... all fine now).
New Issue, can I get someone to confirm.
Video 4 Linux does not load, when either built as a module or into kernel. I.e I don't get creation of /dev/video devices and anything that might use it (for instance spcaview) throws an error saying video4 linux interface functions are not available.
This is strange, I remember hearing talk about changes in the v4l api, but with nitro 13/14 I still got v4l loading and the bt modules loading etc.
Running with a Nvida fx5600 agp. On an MSI master 2 far motherboard. (Opertron 248). 2GB/2GB split, working fine with latest nvidia-kernel in portage.
Specifically need v4l for webcam support.
Can someone confirm this bug in this nitro release (preferably on amd64 arch... but let me know if on 32bit aswell)
Kind regards

So nvidia works with v4l now? Nice but how do i get it working?
hmm i get this error when trying to load the modules
Code: |
gentoo linux # modprobe videodev
FATAL: Error inserting videodev (/lib/modules/2.6.15-nitro3/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.ko): Input/output error

Works great so far, good job! Except for the libata-thing, my dvd-drive is not detected (on a Toshiba Satellite M40, same problem as Phlogiston). Any news about this? _________________ There are only 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't. |

I hope this gets resolved soon enough, seems to be a problem with all PATA drivers in libata and cd-/dvd-roms since the
snapshot i included.
also happens with via pata driver... I'll look into a new libata snapshot, but this might require a new release based on latest
rc kernel to get it even to patch. next few days i have some spare time, so anything MIGHT happen _________________ Retired gentoo user |
