Yes it is the dark of winter here in Oregon and I have nothing better to do than to atempt to install gentoo on a Imac (rev B ithink) 233mhz
G3 Machine ID 406, video memory 6mb built in memory 64mb.
FYI When I recieved it the ethernet was not working on OS 8.6 I spent about 20 min trying unsuccessfully to get it to connect to my DHCP server.
FYI I have never used a mac with anything but osX and darwin and I had no idea what to do, other than install gentoo!)
To get it to boot the live cd I booted the computer, inserted the cd, shutdown the computer, rebooted and pressed | Code: | | apple + option + o + f |
then I got yaboot
at boot:
I entered | Code: | | video=ofonly:800x600@95 |
(like the manual sugests)
It dident like that so I just pressed enter at the boot prompt (should I have specified a kernel?)
It booted nicely with no errors on first try
it is the minimal install cd
No eth0 decteted or set up
running ifconfig just shows local loop back.
I have no idea what chipset they use for the ethernet, and the lights where the imac is pluged in on my router are blinking?
I searched apples specifications website and found no info on the chip set used for ethernet.
the ethernet ID is 0005029f34c8
I did a | Code: | | ls /lib/modules/'uname -r'/kernel/drivers/net |
(like the manual says for manual net config) and got file not found errors. after ls ing around I finaly did a | Code: | | ls /lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r6-ppc32/kernel/drivers/net |
there was also a power book option for a kernel but I think that 2.6.12-gentoo-r6-ppc32 is right, right??
I got a nice list, I crawled all over apples website, the web, google, forums, thoes dam email forums that never have followups, and all elce --to no avail I cannot determine what module to load? well I am bord not frustrated, but i realise there is no searchable database of modules and what they do. -- is there?
Now for fun:
I tried random good seeming modules usiing
an gives me

and it continues with usb and vga but no eth0.
to make things stranger after going modprobe probe happy

Well a lan cable was the culprit for the errors and blinking light on the hub and I seem to be on the net.
Blinking lights on a hub are just soo suspicius.
However my question is how do I determine what module is proper for a mac when it is not auto decteted? Other commands than lspci? am I not getting it from the output above?
Then when I know the device name where can one search for a match becides the ls ing around thing?
I never would have just loaded random modules on a production gentoo box ----or can you?
couldent it crash it or not be the right one?

Well, you search the forums and use google to find out. Or some friendly person will tell you (just this once) you want the sungem module in this case.
