Is my Gentoo dead? (System Error)

I recently did a world portage update and rebooted... Now when I try to log in to the console, I get a "System Error" message, and it kicks me back out to the console login. What should I do next. If I had to take a guess... I would think it is a problem with PAM/shadow? they were part of the updates.

I would not mind re-installing, but KDE takes all day to compile on this slow computer.

Hardware Dell Inspiron 600m 512 MB ram, 1.6 ghz PentiumM.

boot up on the livecd, chroot, and roll back some of the packages. you could try the pam package, mask the latest build and emerge.

Sounds good, I will give it a shot. Hopefully I can figure out what caused it and can report back with what caused it and a possibly fix. Also, I did update the config files for some of the packages with etc-update (YES, I did look at what was being changed in each of the files to make sure it didn't overwrite anything important). I am assuming there is no way to do that :roll:

gentoo never dies. If it doesnt work, do the most idiotic thing you can, and to prevent it from all unnessecary warnings use --force.
This will break it, and while figuring out how to solve it you will find a way to solve all of them
(worked even when i deleted /sbin)

You are absolutely correct... I could not possibly make it any worse.
