Does some rule of thumb (or some specific guide) exist that tells what runlevels I should start specific services on?
On different computers, I notice that I have service foo (for example) started at boot on one computer, and default on the other.
I would appreciate some expert's thoughts on the process. Thank you. |

Normally, either the system decides what runlevel it should be in, or the post-installation blurb told you what to do.
Nobody is forcing you, however, and it's all up to you.
The point is that the boot runlevel is meant for services that are only needed or started when the system physically boots up, like checking your hard disks for errors, or setting the system time.
Unless some service explicitly tells you to put it in boot, put everything in default. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /
