|
|
I got a new motherboard for the holidays. Is there anything I should do before upgrading?
I use onboard video and network, so I'm guessing I'll need to change those drivers. Is there anything else? Any non-kernel programs I'll need to change or configuration files to edit?
If it matters, the new one is an Asus PG5L-MX, the old one was whatever came standard in the Dell dimension 2350 I got for my birthday a while back. _________________ dolphinling

Which is the new video card? If it's a nividia you'll need to emerge nvidia-kernel.. and something else.. please, do a "emerge -s nvidia" to find out.
I don't think you'll need more than that. But wait for someone else to tell you so, because I'm not sure.
Anyway, try to but up with the live CD before trying with your HD installation. Sometimes you miss something physical, and the live-cd is more prone to work whatever board you have. After that, you will probably be able to boot using the HD.
One more advice, make sure your new network card works before changing to the new motherboard. That's not difficult, install it on your (old) motherboard and make it work. So if you need something later you'll have the internet to look for answers.
Good luck!
PS: Remember the laws of hardware upgrading:
- It takes longer than you imagine. No matter how much you imagine.
- If you are in a hurry, things will probably go wrong.
- Make the propper sacrifice to the god of bugs and computer parts. Usualy burning an old HD is enough. Sometimes it requires you to throw a monitor from the 10th floor. You know.. These gods.. Nobody realy knows what they want. And one that is god of bugs and computer parts.. Well.. That's not a sane one.

The specs page says:
Chipset: Intel 915 GL
ââ ââIntel ICH6
VGA: Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900
LAN: Realtek RTL8100C 10/100 LAN controller
...so it's not nvidia, no. _________________ dolphinling
