My hp all in one inkjet is just not cutting it for the volume of journal articles that I now need to print, so I am in search of a laser printer. Currently dell has a sale going on with their refurb printers, so I figure its worth a shot.
I found another thread on here that stated the 3100cn worked with gentoo quite easily, even using the driver off the cd. Now the printer says that it is compatible with linux/unix, and people have said that it works, but it seemed like they were connecting via usb. I have never tried to install a network printer under linux before, assuming I just hook it up to my router and grab an ip address, is the install much different? Or is there any chance that it somehow won't be compatible with network printing? I would really like to have it on the network so that my fiancee and I can both use it, and so I can use it from my laptop. Almost all the printing will be from linux (my desktop-gentoo, my laptop-ubuntu, and fiancee's desktop-ubuntu).
I just wanted to be sure I am not making a $350 mistake here before I take the plunge. It seems like I should be able to do what I want, especially since dell even officially supports linux with this printer, but I am still a newbie with some of this stuff. |

It's not complex to setup a network printer using CUPS. I have a deskjet 3820 connected to a Netgear PS101 (which is not supposed to work with Linux) and I have it working quite well with CUPS and LPD protocol. If you have the IP address and the print queue it should be easy to set up. _________________ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting Life
