I'd happily pay for linux as long as SCO and companies like them won't get any of my money.

Not that I encourage this until it's necessary, but I'd pay for solid rsync updates for gentoo. Somewhat like the Redhat Network sales model.

I will never pay for free software that others wrote and released for free. There is a reason they did that, and by and large, it wasn't to make money.

I've payed for redhat distro's in the past, but that was in support of Redhat managing to release (what, at that time was one of the better distros) a solid distro - 7.3 :) It was outta my software budget at work, so not technically my money, but it was cash I couldn't spend elsewhere. Also payed for a few copies of RAV AV for postfix servers. Solid product as well.

hmm i thought the idea bind the whole thing was to be free.
I think that 95% wouldn't pay for linux and about 70% would
switch over to *BSD

In theory, yes it should be free. However bandwidth isn't always free and servers cost money to buy and host. That's the portion that I'd pay for.

I'd pay for Gentoo if I had the money. SCO won't get a penny out of me.

It is, but that's free as in free speech, not as in free beer. I'd happily pay for a CD of Gentoo (and plan to), so long as what I got was still Free Software. I use it because I want freedom, not because I'm cheap.

Of course, if something is Free Software, you can always put a copy up on an FTP site for anyone to download gratis. But there's more to it than that.

I'm willing to pay for Media or connection, since running such a projekt
is very expensive. But i won't pay a fee like SCO is currently requesting.
As you said it's all about freedom...

Ok, we should fight back....if we just complain here and there and do nothing, SCO and companies like SCO will come in and take what they haven't worked for. Linux is popular because of us...the users, techies and geeks that have used it for so long and so loyaly. And now that linux is becoming popular and hitting mainstream, vultures like SCO think that they can cash in on that popularity. Well to hell with them. I say we should all should join ranks. What I mean is that every distro should first consolodate their user base and let them know that we're all going to stand firmly behind Linus Torvalds and his original effort. We could (as all the users) each send him money to be used to start a single entity (Corporation) to fight scum like SCO.

I'm venting.....

I would only ever pay for linux if I knew for sure that it would be going to the people that ACTUALLY worked for it.

I would pay for Linux.. in fact I have.. I preordered the 1.4 CD Set... I paid for Gentoo because I like it. I paid for it because I understand that Linux is free and I am willingly paying for it, therefore I can live with myself for buying software.

If SCO charges me for linux.. they would not get half a cent from me. Because that would be against my will. And if they somehow manage to win the case.. all they would get from me is the finger.

BTW, on a side note... when are the preordered Gentoo 1.4 CD's shipping? Did anyone receive their order yet?

Nope, if they made it not free so I couldn't do anything I wanted then I hope someone would fork FreeBSD into LinuxBSD or something like that.

Its just the kernel not the whole dang system.
