I'm moving the home router to the box that my mom uses, as it has more pci slots, mom doesn't do much w/ comp, etc. I've read and applied the very helpful home router guide before. I have some questions that I'm looking for FAQ/DOC/etc for. I don't really know enough about them to know how to search, so how to search forums would be good also. I don't know what sort of tunneling I need or even if that is what I need. I imagine all of these questions/issue have been answered before, so I'm just looking for how to find those answers. I'm first looking for how to set up the server, then how to set up the clients. Here are some of the goals/issues/questions/etc:
server:
NFS3 (is 4 much better?) w/ file sharing for network
if it's possible to set up a WAN DNS server to bind a name to the IP for free, that would be nice
remote administration of apache from the other desktop, full access to /var/www
remote root access from the other desktop for remote scheduled backup
no tunneling/remote access/whatever its called from outside the home network
remote access but no writing ability to server for laptop and whatever else may be added
remote access to floppy drives would be really nice
with ACPI/PnP disabled, will network hotplugging work? - I a yes/no or how to set up dummy or something would be nice on this one cause I need to change kernel config soon if I need ACPI for network hotplugging
clients:
NFS3 (4?)
configure what kind of access laptop will have to other desktop and vice versa
Samba support for laptop
remote access but no writing ability to server for laptop and whatever else may be added
remote administration of apache from the other desktop, full access to /var/www
remote root access from the other desktop for remote scheduled backup
remote access to floppy drives on server would be really nice
other desktop have full access to all other comps for remote backup |
