Is it more secure to install gentoo on a multi partition system or all in one partition? _________________ AMD Athlon 64 1.8

What kind of security are you speaking of ? Generally speaking multi-partitions will allow you to maybe only have some system damage when you get filesystem corruption. If you only have one partition and it became corrupted your entire system is then at risk of ever working correctly again. If you keep seperate /home, /var, /usr directories (partitions) then if one gets corrupted you can still keep the rest of your data because it's separated. Also, keeping /boot on it's own partition and then not automounting it at system boot is a great way to keep your kernels and configs needed for booting safe from yourself, from accidentally deleting anything in that filesystem/partition. |

You should at least have a seperate /home partition, since it makes it really easy to reinstall your system or even change the distro (you'll never know! ) and still keep all your settings and personal stuff. It is also wise to put /var and /usr on seperate partition to keep your root partition from getting cluttered and fragmented, besides being able to keep all the distfiles for an eventual reinstall
Also /boot always has its own partition on my systems. |
