I did a search, and most of the threads I found looked pretty grim. Anyway, we are looking to setup Linux servers at each store. We would like the server to run an exchange-type server for Outlook, Outlook Express, Sylpheed, KMail clients. I know most likely it won't support ALL those clients, hence our focus is mainly the Winbloze compatibility. Some are Office XP, 2000, 97 clients.

What I'm getting at is: has there been any progress as of late on a Linux replacement of the M$ Exchange server? I've read through the article in Feb's Linux Journal, but it seemed to be more geared to software developers/coders. What do you guys suggest?

Exchange has broken POP3 (and a few other services if I remember correctly) and I don't know if kmail will talk to it correctly.

Google for OpenExchange. I'm pretty sure it exists (SuSE comes to mind...) but I don't know what state it's in.

If all else fails, a qmail + LDAP server should do you right.

Well, perhaps that is a little far from the $0 price tag you were looking for:

http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/suse_business/openexchange/
Starting Price: $1,249

_But_ on the other hand, it's a helluva lot cheaper than MS Exchange, especially since you want to install it on more than one machine!
