I realize that there are numerous posts that involve the question of mapping media keys on keyboards to various functions, but I have taken the advice that those posters were given (namely viewing The Multimedia Keys How-to).

While, as advised, using dmesg to determine the scancodes, in order to map them appropriately and then work from there, I get the following output from dmesg:
Code:
atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program, like XFree86, might be trying access hardware directly.

I get that for every keystroke from a non-mapped key. This differs significantly from the output the how-to claims should be there:
Code:
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x96 on isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e016 <keycode>' to make it known.

I searched the forums to try to determine whether I was simply missing something or using dmesg improperly, but to no avail (or I wouldn't waste your time asking for your help). That having been said, I'm stumped on something that I feel should be easy to figure out, and as such rather frustrated. Please let me know what I am doing wrong!

I don't know if it will help you as I don't have a multimedia keyboard, but the showkey utility might do what you want.

It should already be on your system as it is part of sys-apps/kbd.

Hmm, I tried that as you suggested, but it does not acknowledge any keypresses that xev doesn't, and therefore doesn't really help here. Thanks for the idea, though!
