Can you be more specific on the steps you've taken to upgrade?
Did you follow 2. General Upgrade Instructions or 3. Upgrading from GCC-3.3 to 3.4?

Did you follow Using revdep-rebuild or Using emerge -e?

And at what stage do you get this error message?

Strange is that compiler looking to i386 directory, and I have i686 in my make.conf:

Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="X mysql -accessibility acpi alsa bluetooth cups divx4linux dvd dvdr ethereal foomaticdb hal -kde icq imagemagick imap gnome gtk2 gphoto2 java lm_sensors mad mime msn new-login nptl ncurses nls oracle pam ppds quicktime recode samba scanner slp snmp ssl truetype usb wifi win32codecs xine xml xmms xvid"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
