lcdproc from cvs and HD44780: init problem.

I have a winamp wired LCD display (20x4). lcd 0.4.5 from portage installs and works. Now I'm trying to compile and install the cvs version. I've downloaded the latest cvs tarball and compiled in enabling HD44780 driver.
Whe I start the server debug output in syslog shows that correct driver is loaded and initialized, but on the LCD I still get the 2 block lines and the 2 blank lines: nothing seems to happen. I think it's something with initialization that fails: anyone has same problem?
