|
|
Hello,
I am constantly updating my kernel, and since the 2.6.14 has been released (gentoo-sources package for AMD64), I cannot load the module for my Broadcom bcm5700 gigabit ethernet card. This module is provided as separated package (net-misc/bcm570x). It compiles (with some warnings) and when I try to modprobe it, I get this:
Code: | FATAL: Error inserting bcm5700 (/lib/modules/2.6.14-gentoo-r5/net/bcm5700.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
|
This is what dmesg says:
Code: | bcm5700: Unknown symbol register_ioctl32_conversion
bcm5700: Unknown symbol unregister_ioctl32_conversion
|
Again, until kernel 2.6.13 it worked.
Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Now I'm using the tg3 module, which seems to work but I don't know if there is a drawback for this.
Thank
gm |

I have this same exact error. No matter what I could not make this card work. Also, what motherboard are you using? Because I couldn't get this to work in a 32 bit environment either. I am using the Asus A8N-SLI Premium which is a little on the edge as far as hardware support because it often has deveice conflicts.
I had no choice but to remove this 4 port hp network card (based on the 5700 broadcom chip) and replace it with a 4 port card supported by tulip. I'm not sure which is to blame (software/mb/card) but I guess it's just a bad combination. |

I have a Tyan Thunder K8W S2885. With the tg3 module the card wotks, at least at 100Mbit. I haven't tested at 1Gbit as my other machines are all at 100Mbit. |

I couldn't get neither to work. The broadcome module wouldn't compile as you have experienced, and the card simply didn't work with tg3 anyways because of the hardware conflicts. I'm glad you got it working though, is there any noticeble difference with the card's performance with the tg3 driver? As far as I'm aware the tg3 driver should be same if not better than the standard broadcom ones. |

thats because the "register_ioctl32_conversion " symbols were taken out of the 2.6.14 kernel.
the broadcom drivers are only tested upto 2.6.13
I am using the tg3 drivers with broadcom NIC.. however.. since i got this machine setup, I've been experiencing random network freezes..

For what its worth, I've got a Broadcom NIC embedded on a Tyan S2882 (Dual Dual-core Opteron 270's). At gigabit speeds I get a total system crash when transmitting large amounts of data (over 300Meg in small files or one large file). The kernel dumps, console locks and I need to reboot. I'm using the tg3 driver with kernel 2.4.21 (RedHat -- my other servers are Gentoo
I have not tried forcing 100Mbit, but when I use the other on-board intel 10/100 chips with e100 driver, I've got no problem, so that's where it sets right now.
I can't seem to find anything to help solve the Gigabit problem with tg3 on this system. (Also, the box is in production right now, so it's hard to get testing time) I'd like to get this figured out because we routinely move files and folders that are well over a Gigabyte in size. _________________ Garth |
