1) Have somebody tried GCC 4.1? How it works on ~amd64?
2) Have somebody tried modular X v7.0? How it works on ~amd64?
3) Have anybody tried GLX (http://www.hboeck.de/item/266)? How does it work on amd64? |

have tried installing with gcc-4.1 with ~amd64. Had problems with approx. a dozen packages which did not compile with -o3 option. Dont know if they would have compiled with -o2, did a quickpkg on the running system (gcc-3.4.4). A simple fluxbox multimedia system (no gnome, no kde, but e17-cvs for testing purposes ) |

I've been using GCC 4.1, and basically it works for most things. It's a bit more strict about things like the incorrect code "class Foo { int Foo::bar(int i); };" (The function shouldn't have Foo:: in front of it), but when that breaks things, I can fix them with -fpermissive. Also, a bunch of stuff fails to link and the linker suggests that I needed to use -fPIC, and although I think this is probably a compiler bug, for the short term I put -fPIC in my flags and now KDE compiles.
As for modular X, it works fine, the biggest lack is documentation of exactly what I need to have the same X I had before. When I first did it, I was having problems with fonts being splotchy, as though they had been resized from a smaller size with no interpolation, and antialiasing only made it fuzzier. I may have fixed this by installing corefonts and also every package in media-fonts that included the string "BigReqs", but I'm not sure whether this got every last instance.
On the subject of fonts, the only way I found to get GTK apps to respect the settings I give them in the gnome control panel while in KDE is to put a symlink to gnome-settings-daemon in my ~/.kde/Autostart.
Also, when I use app-emulation/spim, regardless of whether from portage or built myself, when I run xspim, it just prints the name of a courier font and dies. I'll file a bug when I get around to it.
No idea about GLX |

I had a full GCC 4.1.X gnome system running on my laptop. It seemed to be relatively stable. I've since back ported to the GCC 4.0.2. It seemed a better use of my time to work on an unstable GCC core and not a developing GCC core. At least with an unstable I can submit bugs and not be laughed out of the country.
Modular X works great on my GCC 4.0.2 laptop, but failed repeatedly on X server and Mesa on my GCC 3.4.4 desktop.
No experience with GLX (Other then nvidia-glx.. )
Best of luck. _________________ This space for rent... Well maybe to give away.. Heck.. i'll pay you to take it.

Does anyone have any idea when gcc 4.x and X.org 7.x will be marked ~amd64? Whats keeping them from being marked ~amd64? |
