I think it may be a good idea to create a seperate Gentoo Kernel/Sources topic/forum.

It seems that a lot of questions/problems are asked about kernel sources, and it may help a bit...

Just a suggestion :)

Seconded. Kernel/source questions come up a lot and I've noticed they often get moved around because they're considered innappropriately posted to certain groups. Maybe your suggestion would sort that out as well as lessen the traffic to more general forums.

Thirded. It would probably thin out some of the message traffic in other forums, and kernel question posting *can* be a little ambiguous (i.e. which nic driver to use in kernel -> networking? dri support -> desktops? vanilla sources question -> general linux?).

Agreed.
Sounds like a great idea... for all the reasons just described.

Yes having a kernel forum a good idea. Maybe the moderators have this already in mind? I heard that a reorganisation of the forum is planned.

While this is a good idea in my opinion, don't you guys think there are already too many forums to keep up with?

I think a kernel forum would be a little too specialized... hmm...

We're still tossing around ideas.

Not really. I think the more the merrier. It will help sub-divide problems/questions a little better. For example, I think having a generic "Desktop" forum envelopes WAY too much. That can easily be subdivided further...

But that is only my opinion. :)

So... if we double the number of forums, we'll quadruple the number of posts we get in All Things Gentoo because people don't know where to put 'em.

We're looking at cutting the number of forums by 30%, if not more.

No, I'm not the boss. Talk to klieber and/or Nitro -- but they agree that increasing the number of forums is a Bad Thing (TM).

Ok, but it doesn't make any sense to me. In efforts to stop generic posting to generalized groups, they plan to FORCE people to post to generic groups by removing specialized forums?

The idea is to make the boundaries between forums more clear, which is to be accomplished by merging similar fourms.

We currently have 30 forums (sorta) -- Documentation has 10 posts, and Tips & Tricks has 476. Is there a foundational difference? Yeah, maybe, but they're similar enough that Tips & Tricks can eat Documentation without problems.

Also, one section will be labelled "Troubleshooting", reducing general questions being smattered about.

That makes sense, I guess it depends on which forums are being moved/merged. But that is an argument for a later day :)

Hrm. Wouldn't it be useful to have things properly divided and subdivided? I realize that the greatest volume of posts lands in "All Things Gentoo," primarily because it's where everyone just "sticks it." But wouldn't well defined forums (or subforums) help "unclutter" that mess? I think it would be nice to see a "Kernel 2.5" forum and "Kernel 2.4" forum, but maybe I'm just being selfish. Anywho, I realize it's ultimately up to the admins to decide - but a Troubleshooting forum would definetly be a good idea.
