Hi I setup kde just using emerge as is .....and it works well but when I go to system--->remote places I have the option of local Network or network services .......I want to be able to access shared windows folders through a kde gui but when I click network services ...I get

KDE has been built without Zeroconf support.

and when I access local network I get

The Lisa daemon does not appear to be running.
In order to use the LAN Browser the Lisa daemon must be installed and activated by the system administrator.

I figure that I must have not added these when emerging kde-meta ........I read some stuff on zeroconf and it said about recompiling kde ....I dont really want to do that .......so firstly what is the best network browsing gui to use and is there anyway I can use emerge or another realible tool to add some kind of support so I can browse network shares via kde

Thanks
David

you still need samba installed, thats what kde and everything else uses to browse the windows network. you might also need to recompile some kde things with the samba use flag turned on. if you want to be able to mount the windows drives as partitions on your box you need to enable the samba file system in your kernel.

I've been searching the forums for this exact problem - I could easily quote the entire OP - nice to find I'm not the only one  .
However ... I already have Samba installed - using smb4k I can browse the network & write both to & from my Windoze machines.

So, 2 problems:

Although smb4k works, I would like to able to browse from conquerer.
When I emerge --pretend lisa it says that it is blocked by KDE.
Um, help!

Second, I have added the zeroconf use flag, but how do I re-emerge kde? Just doing a straight emerge kde takes a few seconds - presumably it decides it's already there and doesn't need anything doing.

First problem:
smb4k should also provide an extension for the konqueror sidebar. I had it with kde-3.5.2, but it isn't there 3.5.3. Since i didn't need it I didn' t investigate further.
EDIT: Right click and add on sidebar does the trick
Then what about the samba kioslave? Just enter smb:// (with additional parameters if needed) in the konqueror address bar.

2nd problem:
Code:
emerge -pv --newuse world

will show you which packages are affected by the change in use flags, leave away the --pretend and voila..

Bye, Val.

Thanks :D
The sidebar is working nicely.

As for the emerge - well it's gonna take a while (43 packages  ) but at least I know what to do know.
