Upgrading to Gnome 2.12.2 without upgrading hal

Is it possible to upgrade to gnome 2.12.2 without upgrading hal to 0.5.5.1 version which demands kernel >= 2.6.13. I must use 2.6.12 kernel because of nforce-audio drivers which don't work on newer version of kernel. (Switching to alsa is out of the question)

It seems that the only way is to emerge gnome with USE="-hal".

Is that version a hard dependancy? If not, just mask newer versions of hal...
