Hi all,

Upgrade turned to nightmare on my server. There seems to be some fuzziness about the migration of the old dev-php packages to the new dev-lang ones. Actually I had to remove PEAR completely for my server to work again. At present, zeverything seems to be updated but MySQL is still buggy. When I start it it says it starts, but I don't see it in the output of ps -aux. And I can't stop it either (got a [!!] when trying, which seems logical). Right now I'm trying to re-emerge it, but I'm not sure it will solve everything. I'm getting lost in here. MySQL emerged but not starting. Did someone have the same kind of problem, possibly together with problematic PHP upgrade ?

Config : Gentoo Linux (2.6.11 hardened kernel), Apache/2.0.55 (Gentoo) PHP/4.4.1-pl3-gentoo and (hopefully) 4.1.14 in some time, unless it still starts with no effect.

After some more tries, heres my last result :

- MySQL emerges correctly
- Says it starts but doesn't
- I ran revdep-rebuild to no extent

Don't know what other package could cause problem, don't know how to get it to work. But it has to work 'cause we've got to work with it... :( Help...

Solved, the unsatisfacrory way. Issued an "emerge --config mysql" (had to move all mysql data elsewhere because it would not be recognized) and then daemon agreed to start. Now I have to get everything to work again and believe me, with no SQL backup on hand, it will be a REAL pain in the a... !

I have to state something important here : MySQL was *already* 4.1.x on my system ! How come a microversion update of mysql can get things in such a mess !? I can be cautious when doing major upgrades, but that was supposed to be painless. Can someone in charge of mysql ebuilds try to know why things turned out to be that dull ? :(

Upgrading MySQL is just plain horrible. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/upgrading-from-4-0.html As you can see there are incompatible changes within 4.1.x versions. Yuk.

I got all the dire warnings and have left mine alone. I can't see an ebuild coping with all the possibles.
