State of Gentoo on OS X? Intel Macs?

OK, so does anyone know what needs to be done to get Gentoo for OS X up and running properly? What exactly is wrong with the current installer? Is there anything that someone with minimal experience with C and C++ and a good working knowledge of using Gentoo on a PC can do to help? Is there any need for testing on a MacBook Pro? I'd like to help in any way possible.

This is something I think could be really useful and I'd imagine I'm not the only one.

I installed Darwinports in my new MacBook. Up to some extent, it reminds me of Portage. It looks better than Fink, at least in x86, and the packages are up to date (up to Gentoo-date ;P )

But I read somewhere that there were efforts to bring Portage, darwinports and Fink together under the same flag (metadistribution?). Is this really going to happen? Soon? Will it happen in x86 Macs too?

I am thinking of getting an x86 mac as well... so Portage is not yet usable on OSX? Is it best to use Darwinport till Portage is ready? If so, does Darwinport do what Portage do - figures out dependencies, download sources, compile them using CFLAG, USE, etc?

Which one are you saying is being not useable, Portage or Darwinport?

For those who have used Darwinport... do you know if it compiles the source like Portage or does it do binary install like apt/yum?

Portage, but again that was just me, I know it has worked fine for others.

Darwinports seems to be compiliation (from reading the docs).

I just got my macbook in yesterday, resized the partiton and am in the process of installing gentoo on it.

I may go with darwinports for osx because the ports tree is already with freebsd, probably more stable.

Old-style Gentoo for Mac OS X development is ppc-macos only, and maintained in the tree. No development made on it, in favour of Prefixed Portage (http://gentoo-wiki.com/Portage-prefix) which is expected to work on x86-macos as well as many other systems, without screwing up your Mac if you just want a newer Vim than Apple gave you.

btw: anyone know a good command line download utility on osx?

oh wow looks very similar to compiling something from source. that doesnt really help

OK, the Wiki entry for prefixed portage has been updated to say it is obsolete. Now it directs you here instead. I'm trying it out right now (emergeing system) and so far everything seems to be working fine.

This is so exciting!!! A functioning install of portage on my MacBook! Next will be to try emerging gcc-4.2 beta and ATLAS.
